After dark

Udaipur Night Tour

Four hours from six in the evening, ₹1,000 in a sedan. The Dharohar folk dance at Bagore ki Haveli, the City Palace light show, and the ghats when the city comes back out.

Overview

Udaipur closes at five and then it starts again.

Almost every monument in the city shuts by five or six. What most visitors do not realise is that the two best hours of the Udaipur day happen afterwards — when the City Palace is lit from below, the ghats fill with people who live here rather than people visiting, and the folk performance at Bagore ki Haveli begins in a courtyard fifty feet from the water.

The night tour is four hours, from about six to ten. It is short, it is cheap, and it is the single most under-booked thing we offer. Guests who do it almost always say afterwards that it was the part they remember.

Two fixed events anchor the evening: the Dharohar folk dance at Bagore ki Haveli at seven, and the Sound and Light Show in the City Palace Manek Chowk, which runs in English and Hindi on alternating slots. Both need tickets bought at the venue; the driver will get you there early enough to sit where you want to sit.

Highlights

Where the evening goes

A four-hour loop that works whether or not you take in a show.

Bagore ki Haveli

The Dharohar performance at seven — Ghoomar, Bhavai with pots stacked on the head, and puppetry, in a haveli courtyard by the ghat.

City Palace, lit

The Manek Chowk sound and light show tells the Mewar story against the palace itself. Alternating English and Hindi sittings.

Gangaur & Ambrai Ghat

The classic night view across the water to the City Palace. Come for the light, stay because everyone in Udaipur is here.

Fateh Sagar bund

The drive along the lake after dark, with the Nehru Garden island lit in the middle.

Doodh Talai & the ropeway

The cable car up to Karni Mata for the city from above. Check the last ascent time in winter.

Lake Palace from the water

Evening boat slots at the City Palace jetty, seasonal and worth confirming on the day.

Udaipur after dark

The city is genuinely beautiful at night and almost nobody plans for it. Tour itineraries are built around monument opening hours, so by six in the evening most visitors are back at the hotel. Meanwhile the ghats are filling up, the City Palace floodlights come on, and the rooftop restaurants around Lal Ghat start serving with a view that costs nothing extra.

The Dharohar show

Bagore ki Haveli is an eighteenth-century mansion on Gangaur Ghat, restored and run as a museum. The evening performance in its courtyard is the best folk programme in the city — Ghoomar, Chari with lit pots, Bhavai where the dancer balances seven or eight brass pots while stepping on the rim of a thali, and Kathputli puppetry. It lasts about an hour and starts at seven. In season, arrive by half past six for a good seat.

The sound and light show

In Manek Chowk inside the City Palace, the show runs through the Mewar story from Bappa Rawal to Maharana Pratap, projected against the palace walls. Hindi and English sittings alternate; check which is running on your date. Seating tiers are priced differently and the upper tier is worth the difference.

Practical points

Both venues need tickets bought there, and both get busy in December. Photography rules differ — Bagore ki Haveli charges a camera fee. Evenings between November and February are cold enough to want a jacket, which surprises people who have spent the afternoon in a shirt.

Around six in the evening, finishing by ten. The Dharohar folk performance at Bagore ki Haveli starts at seven, so we pick you up with enough margin to get a good seat.

₹1,000 in a sedan or ₹1,500 in an Innova for four hours. Both shows in one evening is ₹1,400 and ₹1,900 respectively. Show tickets are extra and bought at the venue.

An hour of Rajasthani folk performance in the courtyard of Bagore ki Haveli on Gangaur Ghat — Ghoomar, Chari with lit pots, Bhavai pot-balancing and Kathputli puppetry. Tickets are ₹90–₹150 with a separate camera charge.

English and Hindi sittings alternate, so it depends on your date. Tell us when you book and we will check which slot is running.

Yes, and many guests do. It is charged as an extension of the day rather than a separate booking, which works out cheaper than two hires.

The drive and the ghats are lovely in the rain. The open-courtyard folk performance can be affected by heavy weather, so we check on the day and will suggest the indoor alternative if needed.
