Jodhpur is two hundred and fifty-four kilometres from Udaipur, and the best way to do the journey is not the direct highway but the road through Ranakpur and the Desuri ghat — it adds ninety minutes and a Jain temple with 1,444 pillars, which is a trade most people would take.
The city itself is dominated by Mehrangarh, a fort that sits four hundred feet above the old town on a sandstone outcrop, with walls that in places are a hundred and twenty feet high. It is arguably the best-run fort museum in India: the audio guide is excellent, the collections are properly curated, and the view down over the blue houses is the image everyone comes for.
Three days and two nights covers the city comfortably. Add a night and Jaisalmer opens up, which is the combination we run most often — the Blue City and the Golden City in one week.

Elegant Jodhpur — 3 days, 2 nights
The pace assumes you would rather see three things properly than seven in passing.
Leave after breakfast. If you have chosen the Ranakpur route we stop at the temple around midday, otherwise it is a straight five hours. Check in, then the evening in the old town below the fort — the Clock Tower, Sardar Market, and the lanes where the blue actually is. Our driver will point you at the sweet shops that locals use rather than the ones with English signage.
A full day. Mehrangarh takes three hours at minimum — the Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, the palanquin and howdah galleries, and the ramparts with the cannons still in place. Take the audio guide; it is one of the best in the country. Then Jaswant Thada, the white marble cenotaph a kilometre away, and in the afternoon Mandore Gardens, the old Marwar capital, with its cenotaphs built like temples.
The museum wing of Umaid Bhawan Palace in the morning — the palace is still partly a royal residence and partly a Taj hotel, and only a section is open, but the art deco interiors and the vintage car collection make it worthwhile. On the road by noon and back in Udaipur by early evening.

Udaipur to Jodhpur — planning notes
Two hundred and fifty-four kilometres direct, about five hours on NH-62 via Pali. The scenic alternative runs through Gogunda, Ranakpur and the Desuri ghat, adding roughly ninety minutes but delivering both Kumbhalgarh and Ranakpur on the way. If your itinerary can absorb the extra day, this is comfortably the best value in Rajasthan travel.
Mehrangarh
Allow three hours, and more if you like museums. The fort is entered by a winding road up through seven gates; there is a lift for those who want it. The collections — palanquins, howdahs, arms, miniature paintings, cradles — are genuinely well displayed, and the audio guide is worth every rupee. The ramparts on the north side give the best view of the blue houses.
Why the houses are blue
You will hear three explanations: that it marked Brahmin homes, that the indigo wash deterred termites, and that it simply kept interiors cooler. All three are probably partly true and the practice has spread well beyond any original logic. The densest blue is in the Navchokiya area, below the fort’s north face, and that is where photographers go.
Continuing to Jaisalmer
Two hundred and eighty-five kilometres west, about five hours across increasingly empty country. Doing Jodhpur and Jaisalmer together as a four-day run from Udaipur is our most-booked Rajasthan package for good reason — the contrast between the two cities is the whole point of the trip.

Three hours minimum. The audio guide is one of the best in India and the collections genuinely reward time. There is a lift if the climb through the gates is a problem.
Only just — five hundred kilometres of driving with a 6 AM start and a late return, for ₹5,500 in a sedan. You would see Mehrangarh and little else. Two nights is much better.
It is our most-booked Rajasthan package. Jaisalmer is a further two hundred and eighty-five kilometres west, and the contrast between the blue city and the desert fort is the point of the whole trip.
