Temple circuit

Nathdwara & Eklingji Taxi

Shrinathji at 48 km and Eklingji at 22. Half day from ₹2,200 with waiting included — and a driver who knows which darshan slot you are aiming for and when to leave Udaipur.

Overview

Forty-eight kilometres, and the whole reason many people come to Mewar.

Shrinathji at Nathdwara is not a monument you visit; it is a temple where a very large number of people have a personal stake. The deity was brought here from Vrindavan in the seventeenth century to keep it safe, and the town grew around it. Darshan happens in eight separate slots through the day, each with its own name and its own character, and the queues are shaped entirely by which slot you choose.

This is why a local driver matters more here than anywhere else on the Mewar circuit. Mangla, the first darshan, is around half past five in the morning and needs an early start from Udaipur; Rajbhog around eleven is the most popular and the most crowded; Shayan in the evening is calmer. Our chauffeurs know the current timings, where to park so elderly travellers walk the least, and which approach road is not blocked on a festival day.

The standard trip pairs Nathdwara with Eklingji, twenty-two kilometres from Udaipur on the way — a 108-shrine complex around an eighth-century temple to Shiva, the tutelary deity of the Mewar rulers. Many guests add Charbhuja or Sanwariya Seth and make it a longer day.

Highlights

The Mewar temple circuit

Five places within a short drive of Udaipur, in the order they usually make sense.

Eklingji, 22 km

An 8th-century Shiva temple rebuilt in the 15th, with 108 shrines around it. The Mewar rulers governed as its stewards rather than as kings in their own right.

Nathdwara, 48 km

Shrinathji, brought from Vrindavan in 1672. Eight darshan slots a day, each with a different name, mood and crowd.

Charbhuja, 112 km

At Garhbor, a Vishnu temple of great antiquity and, for many Mewari families, the more personal of the two.

Sanwariya Seth, 90 km

At Mandaphiya near Chittorgarh. The Krishna temple that traders across western India treat as a business partner.

Ranakpur, 91 km

Not on the Vaishnav circuit but on the same roads — the Jain temple with 1,444 pillars, no two carved alike.

Timing is everything

Darshan slots shift with the season and close for long stretches. We check the current schedule before your travel date rather than relying on a printed list.

Nathdwara darshan — practical notes

The temple opens for darshan in eight slots spread through the day, each lasting from a few minutes to about an hour. In rough order these are Mangla in the early morning, Shringar, Gwal, Rajbhog around midday, Uthapan, Bhog, Aarti and Shayan in the evening. The deity is dressed differently for each, which is much of the point — regular visitors come for a particular one.

Which slot to aim for

Mangla is the most atmospheric and needs a four or five o'clock departure from Udaipur. Rajbhog is the most popular and therefore the most crowded — on a weekend or a festival the queue can take well over an hour. Shringar in the morning and the evening slots are usually calmer. Timings shift seasonally and the temple closes between slots, so the single most useful thing we do is check the current schedule for your date.

Rules at the temple

  • Phones and cameras are not allowed inside; there are lockers, and the driver can keep your things in the car.
  • Leather items are generally not permitted past a point — belts and wallets included.
  • Dress modestly; shoulders and knees covered is the safe standard.
  • The town around the temple is pedestrian for the last stretch, so there is some walking whatever the parking.

Making a day of it

Nathdwara alone is a comfortable half day. Adding Eklingji on the return makes it a full morning and early afternoon. If you want Charbhuja or Sanwariya Seth as well, start early — these are proper distances and the roads, while good, are not fast. Pilgrim groups of fifteen and above are better served by a tempo traveller than by two cars, for the simple reason that everyone gets to the gate together.

Forty-eight kilometres on a good road — about an hour and fifteen minutes. Eklingji is twenty-two kilometres out and sits directly on the way, which is why the two are almost always done together.

₹2,200 in a sedan or ₹2,800 in an Innova for the round trip with waiting. Adding Eklingji is ₹2,600 and ₹3,200. A seventeen-seat tempo traveller for a group is ₹5,500 to ₹6,000.

No. The driver stays with the car for however long darshan takes, including a two-hour Rajbhog queue. Nothing runs on a meter while you are inside.

Eight slots through the day, from Mangla in the early morning to Shayan in the evening, with closures in between. The exact times shift seasonally, so we confirm the current schedule for your travel date rather than quoting from memory.

Yes — that means a four or five o’clock departure from Udaipur, and we do it regularly. The fare for the early start is ₹2,800 in a sedan.

Both, though they turn the trip into a long day. Sanwariya Seth at Mandaphiya is 90 km and Charbhuja at Garhbor is 112. A full circuit covering the main temples in one day is ₹4,500 in a sedan.
