Overview
India’s first planned city, and it still works.
Jaipur was laid out in 1727 by Sawai Jai Singh II on a grid, with nine rectangular sectors, streets of fixed width and a wall around the whole thing. Three hundred years later the grid is still legible and still functioning, which is more than most planned cities manage. The pink came later, in 1876, painted for a royal visit and then kept.
The sights divide neatly. Inside the walled city: the City Palace, Jantar Mantar with its enormous stone instruments, Hawa Mahal’s honeycomb facade, and the bazaars — Johari for jewellery, Bapu for textiles, Tripolia for lac bangles. Outside: Amber Fort on its ridge eleven kilometres north, Jal Mahal sitting in the middle of Man Sagar, Nahargarh above the city, and Jaigarh with the largest cannon on wheels ever made.
From Udaipur it is three hundred and ninety-three kilometres, seven hours on NH-48. Most guests either fly and take the car locally, or make it part of a longer circuit through Chittorgarh and Pushkar.

Amber Fort
Eleven kilometres north on a ridge above Maota Lake. Sheesh Mahal, the Ganesh Pol, and a light-and-sound show in the evening.
Hawa Mahal
953 windows in a five-storey screen, built so the women of the court could watch the street unseen. Best photographed early.
Jantar Mantar
Jai Singh’s observatory, 1734. The Samrat Yantra sundial is twenty-seven metres high and accurate to two seconds.
City Palace
Still partly a royal residence. The Mubarak Mahal textile collection and the silver urns in Diwan-i-Khas are the highlights.
Jal Mahal & Nahargarh
The water palace in Man Sagar, and the hill fort above it — the best place in Jaipur to watch the sun go down.
Chokhi Dhani
A staged Rajasthani village on the Tonk road. Unashamedly a tourist thing, and a very good evening with children in tow.
Jaipur from Udaipur — the options
Three hundred and ninety-three kilometres, about seven hours on NH-48 through Chittorgarh, Nimbahera and the Ajmer bypass. There are three sensible ways to do it: fly or take the train and hire a car locally in Jaipur, drive up and back as part of a longer circuit, or take a one-way drop and continue onward to Agra and Delhi.
The overnight-drive day tour
A number of guests travel from Udaipur overnight, arrive in the morning and do a full Jaipur city day from half past eight to half past five, covering Amber Fort, Jal Mahal, City Palace, Jantar Mantar, Hawa Mahal, Birla Temple and Ram Niwas Garden. It is ₹5,000 in a sedan and ₹6,000 in an Innova, with extra kilometres at ₹10 and ₹12 respectively. It works, but it is a long thirty-six hours.
Breaking the journey
Chittorgarh is a hundred and eighteen kilometres out of Udaipur and sits directly on the route, which makes it the obvious stop. Pushkar and Ajmer are a short detour from the Kishangarh area. Either turns a tiring drive day into a proper part of the holiday.
Amber Fort practicalities
Go early. By ten the ramp is crowded and the Sheesh Mahal is a queue. The elephant rides are limited by welfare rules and start early; jeeps run continuously. The light-and-sound show in the evening is genuinely good and is a separate visit. If you have two days in Jaipur, put Amber on the first morning and the walled city on the second.
